Created in 1988 by Jan Dejmo, the IOM class rules were written to enable boats to be built from scratch or kit by non-expert builders and inexpensively by a commercial builder without disadvantage to either group; the International One Metre (IOM) has become one of the most popular class in the UK.

Hulls must be constructed of either wood or glass re-inforced composite with carbon fibre only being allowed in the construction of the fin and rudder. Spars shall be of alloy or timber and the sails are to 'One Design' sizes, with the number of rigs is limited to three.
This makes the class very popular for amateur builders and many designers have plans for competitive boats. There are a number of Builders here in UK and overseas, who can supply plans for home completion, hulls and rigs or complete boats.
There are currently over 330 hull designs for this class - https://www.allradiosailboats.com/class/iom
Current commercially built designs can cost several thousand pounds just for the hull, so following a growing trend from down-under, GOMYC have decided to start racing a Classic IOM fleet, with the stipulation that it must be a pre-2010 design (which is still nearly 130 designs!), as these can commonly be found abandoned in someones shed or garage and often sell for between £300 and £700, with two or three rigs.
This is a list of pre-2010 designs we include, however it is not definitive, and if someone can provide evidence that their boat should be included, we will concider it:
At present, we have the following classic designs in the club:
- Jazz
- Red Wine
- Widget
- Nimbus
- Gadget
- Slim Chance
- Triple Crown
- Topiko
- Vanish
- Lintel
- Saucepan
- Robot
Some are currently under restoration, and we hope to have them racing in the near future.
